Keep your voice down. Most of our crew followed that purple shimmer deeper, swearing they heard hammers beneath the stone. Then they came back wrong. Eyes empty, skin lit from inside. We think something used the crystals to call them. Put twelve of the consumed to rest before they find this camp.

The violet glow is easy to spot. Twelve, and no fewer. Every one left standing is another pick at our barricade.
On completion
You saw it too, then: the light moving through them like blood. That settles it. The vein did not make them greedy by accident. Something down here wanted miners digging toward it.
