The dead come from the eastern village and down the north road. Some still wear our neighbors' coats. We cannot afford to recognize every face while it is climbing the gate. Break twelve of their advance troops. Work the north approach or the ruined streets east of town, and leave the gate guards room to hold their posts.

Keep the fighting outside the palisade. Their archers make the mixed groups dangerous; deal with those carefully.
On completion
Fewer hands at the gate tonight. It is a reprieve, but one we can use.
